May 12 is the International Women in Mathematics Day. The day is in honor of Maryam Mirzakhani, born the 12 May 1977, the first and only woman to win the Fields Medal. As part of the events related to this important day, SISSA Math area organizes two very interesting initiatives.

For the first edition of SISSA Women in Mathematics, two colloquia for the whole area of mathematics will take place. The two speakers will be Chiara Rigoni from University of Bonn and Ada Boralevi from Politecnico di Torino. Chiara Rigoni’s talk is entitled “Metric measure spaces with a lower bound on the Ricci curvature" whereas Ada Boralevi will address the topic “Spaces of matrices with rank conditions". Both of them are alumnae or postdocs who have been in SISSA and gave their contribution to the School’s community. SISSA SIAM Student Chapter collaborated on the organization. The seminars will be introduced by Prof. Tamara Grava and Prof. Barbara Fantechi. The second initiative organized by SISSA Math area will be addressed to the whole SISSA community. It’s the screening of the documentary “Picture a scientist” , which will be available from 14 to 16 May 2021 to all SISSA people.

The movie was presented at Tribeca Festival 2020 and “chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Professor Nancy Hopkins, chemist Professor Raychelle Burks, and geologist Dr. Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make sense itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all”.

The screening will be available in an asynchronous fashion: every registered member will get a link to access the movie at their own most convenient time within that time frame. On the morning of May 13th, an e-mail will be sent to the whole SISSA community with a universal link to access the documentary. Moreover on June 3rd at 5 pm a discussion panel via Zoom related to the documentary will take place. The panel will be composed of

Prof. Barbara Fantechi (faculty)
Dr. Audrey Franceschi Biagioni (postdoc, CUG member)
Dr. Martina Zizza (student)

and it will be moderated by Dr. Claudia Antolini (TIGER in STEMM, science communicator and inclusion advocate (SISSA
Alumni))
