SISSA Medialab is SISSA’s in-house company specialising in scientific publishing, science communication and public engagement. Combining expertise in publishing and communication, it facilitates the production of scientific knowledge, its dissemination, and the dialogue between scientists and citizens. Through collaborations with institutions and professionals in Italy and internationally, it contributes to the School’s public engagement mission.
SISSA Medialab manages seven prestigious, international journals, specialising in physics and science communication, and collaborates to the publication of various editorial products, under the motto "by scientists for scientists". Since its inception, it has been at the forefront of technological innovation and open science. SISSA Medialab’s commitment to excellence is upheld by editorial boards comprised of world-renowned, active experts.
SISSA Medialab develops activities tailored to primary and secondary schools, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking through informal learning, participation and inclusion. The topics covered include several contemporary research themes and its educational work encompasses school visits, encounters with researchers, guidance on STEM study and career options, and training that helps teachers introduce these subjects and approaches in the classroom.
With several European projects under its belt, SISSA Medialab is committed to promoting science communication. Its European work combines professional development, dissemination and collaboration across organisations, including the design of approaches to involve differente audiences in research. Projects also connect science communication professionals through international networks. Participation extends across European funding programmes for research, education and citizenship, bringing these activities into different institutional and educational settings.
SISSA Medialab designs training courses aimed at different professionals such as researchers, journalists, museum professionals and science communicators. The training responds to participants’ professional contexts through innovative methods centred on learning with peers. It also serves companies and institutions that can commission courses adapted to their needs. The offer covers communication with different audiences, working with the media, informal education and the design and evaluation of public engagement activities.
From ideation to production, SISSA Medialab curates projects that communicate research and innovation for both public and private entities. Each initiative draws on a combination of professional skills and communication tools selected for its objectives and intended audiences. Projects may address research communities, families or schools, adapting the content and forms of engagement to their different needs.
