“This film is a tribute to good education, which is a fundamental human right. I interviewed five SISSA PhD students from all over the world to present their stories. Their experience is similar to that of many other people who, one day, decided to leave their home to improve their education. Students I interviewed have talent, they have overcome many difficulties, they have worked hard to get good results. All of them are very special people who study in very special institutes like ICTP and SISSA”. This is how Rodrigo de León Ardón comments on the video he has conceived and produced. Rodrigo is a 29 year old SISSA PhD student from Guatemala. His field of research is Astroparticle Physics “The main topic of my research is gravity, particularly classical "modifications" and possible venues of quantization” he explains.

Even though he didn’t have any experience in film-making, he decided to embark on this video project: “Nobody asked me to produce this video, I did it all by myself with the support of friends, colleagues and SISSA Medialab. I really wanted to make the film because all these stories deserved to be told. All the students interviewed have participated in the project with passion and curiosity. They were great, really”. In Rodrigo’s opinion, they all represent a virtuous model of integration of different cultures under the flag of education and knowledge. “In this sense, ICTP and SISSA are perfect places because both are institutes with high-standards of education and research”.

The film is dedicated to Brenda Dominguez, a 16 years old student from Guatemala who was killed in the street of the capital of the country in Spring 2017 during a student protest demonstration. She was asking for better education in Guatemala “This is my homage to her memory and ideals. A support to the younger generation that wants to overcome difficulties in an environment that condemns them”. Is there a message in your video? “I would like people all around the world and, in particular, in my own country, to watch the video and understand that changing things is hard, but possible.  It is everybody’s challenge, for the younger generation, in particular”.

Sono state grandi, davvero”.
