SISSA Christmas Lecture 2020, an excursus into art, maths and symbols

SISSA 2020 Christmas Lecture will take place on 16 December at 10.30. The Guest lecturer of this edition is Chiara Valerio, author and mathematician that will hold a speech entitled “La testa e la croce, il linguaggio simbolico e la cinematica” (the head and the cross, symbolic language and kinematics) an excursus into art, maths and symbols.

The ceremony will start with institutional greetings by Director Stefano Ruffo and General Secretary Gabriele Rizzetto. The main lecture and a Q&A session will follow. The event will be in Italian and will be moderated by Ruggero Rollini, a former student of SISSA Master’s Course in Comunicazione della Scienza “Franco Prattico” and author of Superquark+.

Chiara Valerio obtained a PhD in Mathematics at Università Federico II di Napoli. She currently works as responsible for the “Italian fiction” sector of the Italian publishing Marsilio Editori. She also collaborates with Rai Radio 3, L'Espresso and Vanity Fair. Her latest book is entitled “La matematica è politica” (Einaudi, 2020).
