It is with great emotion and sincere sorrow that the entire SISSA community salutes our student Samuel Tamagnone, who tragically passed away in a mountain accident on Saturday 26 April 2025.
Originally from Marene, in the province of Cuneo, Samuel graduated in Physics at the Polytechnic University of Turin in 2022. He was attending the third year of the SISSA PhD course in Physics and Chemistry of Biological Systems. He was also student representative for the same course
Samuel will leave a deep void in all of us, human and scientific. The void is particularly felt in his research group, where he was carrying out highly innovative studies on the use of neural networks to describe heterogeneous and complex molecular systems in an accurate and interpretable way.
Samuel was a good and affable person whose immense talent went far beyond science. Many of us shared with him his great passion for the mountains, for cycling, for photography, but also for simple, everyday activities such as cooking, which he knew how to enjoy with genuine enthusiasm. Samuel knew how to build bridges between people. A precious and rare gift that is the essence of living together and, also, of doing science. This is why he enjoyed the trust and esteem of his classmates, his friends, his teachers and all those who knew him.
Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and all his collaborators to whom we extend a sincere embrace.
We will always remember his laugh, his helpfulness and his ability to positively face not only the most intense moments of study and research, but also those of everyday life. We will make his teaching our own, which we will carry with us along with his memory.
