During the annual Spring Gala organised by the Cinzia Vitale Cultural Association, SISSA scientist Laura Donnay received the Cinzia Vitale 2023 Prize, awarded to outstanding personalities in the fields of science, culture and art.

The Cinzia Vitale Onlus Association is a non-profit organisation that promotes culture, art, science and social solidarity. Founded in 2011 in Trieste, the association's main objective is to keep alive the memory of Cinzia Vitale, a young woman from Trieste who died prematurely, through the organisation of cultural and scientific events.

Laura Donnay was awarded the prize as ‘A scientist engaged in the research of classical and quantum aspects of gravity, particularly on the emergence of dimensional symmetries that arise at the boundaries of space-time, dedicating her work to unveiling a holographic description of gravity and the properties of black holes.’

"I feel deeply grateful to the Vitale Foundation for awarding me this prize and for acknowledging the significance of advancing fundamental and theoretical research. It was an honour to attend the ceremony and to have the opportunity to connect with other researchers from various disciplines such as oceanography and engineering. Witnessing the wide range of scientific advancements being made in Trieste was truly remarkable and inspiring" commented Donnay.

The Cinzia Vitale Prize, established in 2012, is one of the association's main initiatives. It is awarded annually to a person who, through their commitment and professional activity in Italy or around the world, has been able to offer their knowledge through initiatives linked to the promotion of culture and science, encouraging and supporting a more complete human and social education. The recognition, which is under the High Patronage of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, has been awarded in previous years to outstanding personalities such as Syrian Ambassador of Peace Asmae Dachan (2022), Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, General Director of Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (2021), Friday For Future Italia spokesperson Federica Gasbarro (2020), and scientist Silvia Marchesan (2019).
