It was already known that people affected by Parkinson’s disease, when subjected to deep brain stimulation, gained weight, but it was less clear why that was so. Thanks to new SISSA research, it has been realized that the weight gain after implant has a multifactorial origin. The study, published on the scientific journal Cortex, monitored for the first time a group of patients before and after the intervention, assessing cognitive, psychological and behavioural aspects. The results show that weight gain is associated with an increased desire for food and level of impulsiveness, as well as with the duration of the disease and the reduction of pharmacological treatment, thereby providing important elements for preventative purposes.

Era già noto che le persone affette da malattia di Parkinson sottoposte a stimolazione cerebrale profonda ingrassassero, ma meno chiaro era il perché. Grazie a una nuova ricerca della SISSA si è compreso che l’aumento di peso dopo l’impianto ha origini molteplici. Lo studio, pubblicato sulla rivista scientifica Cortex, ha monitorato per la prima volta un gruppo di pazienti prima e dopo l’intervento, valutandone gli aspetti cognitivi, psicologici e comportamentali. I risultati dimostrano che l’incremento ponderale è associato a un aumento del desiderio per il cibo e al livello di impulsività, ma anche alla durata della malattia e alla riduzione della terapia farmacologica, fornendo così elementi importanti a scopo preventivo.
