PhD positions
Twice a year the sector holds entrance exams, typically in April and Septempber.
The deadline for applications is around a week beforehand. The entrance exam (written and oral) is compulsory for applicants from within the EU. Candidates from outside the EU can alternatively be admitted via a pre-selection, based only on their academic record and reference letters.
SISSA makes a contribution towards the travel expenses for attending the exam.
Phd courses
Teaching of Functional Analysis at the PhD level is the main focus of our sector, which organizes the courses in
 Mathematical Analysis Curriculum
 Applied Mathematics Curriculum
Both curricula consist of three to four years of study and research. First year graduate students are asked to attend several courses (may be reading courses as well) spanning a period from November to the end of May and to pass some exams.
In order to be admitted to the next year the students need to have collected enough credits (the number and the topics are decided by the academic staff for each student), with restrictions on the grades.

Supervisors
After or near the completion of the coursework stage, the students will start their research work under the supervision of a faculty member (sometimes of an external supervsor).
Annual qualifying exams
The students attending the second and third year of the PhD are requested to report on the status of their research project, giving a brief discussion typically in October.
