The story of the mathematician Évariste Galois heralds the opening of the 2017 Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. The romantic legend of an absolute prodigy of mathematics, who was killed at a very young age during a fatal duel on 29 May 1832, comes to life in a documentary film by Giuseppe Mussardo and Diego Cenetiempo, produced by SISSA and ICTP. By blending the biographical and the creative, the film tells of the beginning of an extraordinary scientific adventure made up of profound intuitions, which were unappreciated at the time but which were to change the face of mathematics and physics over the following two centuries. The Italian première of “Galois. Story of a revolutionary mathematician” will be presented on Friday 27 October at 6.30pm at the Ariston cinema (Italian version).

SYNOPSIS
Paris, May 29, 1832. In the middle of the night, on the eve of a duel, Évariste Galois, a little older than twenty, handles for the last time a manuscript full of equations and theorems he had written four years earlier. “I have no time! I do not have time!” he frantically wrote in the margins.
Apart from the solution to a famous algebraic problem that has obsessed the minds of great mathematicians for centuries, that manuscript marks the beginning of an extraordinary scientific adventure that radically changed the way we see the world nowadays. Galois has made us aware of the power of symmetry and mathematical beauty, providing us with the ideal language to unveil the fundamental laws of the universe, from the microscopic world of elementary particles studied at CERN in Geneva, to the extraordinary vastness of intergalactic spaces.
Genius, rebellious, revolutionary, bitter due to the lack of official recognition, intolerant of injustices, tormented by his father’s suicide, Galois is a romantic heroic character, a figure who seems to come out of the pages of a Victor Hugo or Stendhal’s novel.
The tragic history of his life has a fascination that never seems to end.

La storia del matematico Évariste Galois anticipa l’apertura del Trieste Science+Fiction Festival 2017. Il mito romantico di un enfant prodige assoluto della matematica, morto giovanissimo in un fatale duello il 29 maggio 1832, rivive in un documentario ideato e scritto da Giuseppe Mussardo con la regia di Diego Cenetiempo. La pellicola è stata prodotta da SISSA e ICTP. Intrecciando il percorso biografico e quello creativo, la storia racconta l’inizio di un’avventura scientifica straordinaria fatta di intuizioni profonde e incomprese nella sua epoca, ma capaci di cambiare il volto della matematica e della fisica nei due secoli a venire. La prima italiana di “Galois. Storia di un matematico rivoluzionario” è in programma venerdì 27 ottobre alle ore 18.30 al cinema Ariston.

Parigi, 29 maggio 1832. Nel cuore della notte, alla vigilia di un duello, Évariste Galois, poco più che ventenne, mette mano per l’ultima volta a un manoscritto pieno di equazioni e di teoremi che ha scritto nei quattro anni precedenti. “Non ho tempo! Non ho tempo!” annota freneticamente sui margini.
Oltre la soluzione di un famoso problema algebrico, che ha ossessionato per secoli la mente di grandi matematici, quel manoscritto segna l’inizio di un’avventura scientifica straordinaria che ha cambiato radicalmente il modo di vedere il mondo. Galois infatti ci ha fatto scoprire la potenza della simmetria e della bellezza matematica, fornendoci il linguaggio ideale per svelare le leggi fondamentali dell’Universo, dal mondo microscopico delle particelle elementari studiate al CERN di Ginevra, alla straordinaria vastità degli spazi intergalattici.
Geniale, ribelle, rivoluzionario, amareggiato dalla mancanza di riconoscimenti ufficiali, insofferente di fronte alle ingiustizie, tormentato dal suicidio del padre, Galois è l’eroe romantico per antonomasia, una figura che sembra uscire dalle pagine di un romanzo di Victor Hugo o di Stendhal.
