Constraints on Scattering from the Infrared |
ABSTRACT: The universal behavior of soft limits of scattering amplitudes is
symptomatic of symmetry enhancement. We will begin by reviewing the
connection between QFT soft theorems and asymptotic symmetries of
asymptotically flat spacetimes. Curiously the structure we find is
reminiscent of a CFT living in codimension 2 at null infinity. We
will discuss ongoing efforts to understand the nature of this putative
dual. |

Supersymmetric indices, partition functions, and the topological A-twist |
ABSTRACT: I will present some recent results about supersymmetric indices, partition functions and related observables that can be computed exactly on a large class of supersymmetric background geometries, in three- and four-dimensional gauge theories with four flat-space supercharges. I will emphasize interesting relationships between these observables, and their common origin in a certain A-twisted topological field theory in two dimensions. |

The infrared physics of bad theories |
ABSTRACT: Three-dimensional gauge theories with eight supercharges (3d N=4) have a rich moduli space of supersymmetric vacua with different low energy physics. This infrared physics is well understood for theories with large enough number of flavours ("good theories"), but less so if the number of flavours is small ("bad theories"). In this talk I will focus on 3d N=4 super-QCD theories with U(N) gauge group and N_f flavours of fundamental hypermultiplets. After reviewing known results and puzzles about such theories, I will discuss their quantum corrected moduli space of vacua, which consists of Higgs, Coulomb and mixed branches, and their low energy physics as N and N_f are varied. As a by-product, I will clarify if and in which sense bad U(N) gauge theories with N_f >= N flavours flow to their "Seiberg dual" good U(N_f-N) theories with N_f flavours (plus free fields) at low energies, as is suggested by localization results. |

Higher Spin Black Holes |
ABSTRACT: I'll overview recent progress on non-perturbative aspects of higher spin theories in three dimensions with emphasis on black holes. The two main results I will discuss are: 1) novel properties of extremal and susy solutions, and 2) Lorentzian features of eternal higher spin black holes. |

Anomalous dimension of giant gravitons from non-abelian DBI and Spin Matrix theory |
ABSTRACT: The overall theme of this talk on Spin Matrix theory and giant gravitons is if one can find a unifying framework that can connect the gauge and string theory sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence, thus enabling one to quantitatively connect the two sides. In the planar regime, the integrable spin chain provides such a unifying framework but it cannot be used beyond planar gauge theory and tree-level string theory. Spin Matrix theory is argued to provide instead a unifying framework close to unitarity bounds, or, equivalently, certain zero-temperature critical points in the grand canonical ensemble. We begin the talk by introducing Spin Matrix theory (SMT). SMT can be seen as a finite-N generalization of a nearest neighbor spin chain. SMT describes N=4 SYM near certain unitarity bounds and zero-temperature critical points. We find a new tractable regime at finite N described by a classical matrix model. Next we go to the string side of the AdS/CFT correspondence and explain that the dual is given by highly excited giant gravitons. Finally, we match the matrix model to interacting giant gravitons on AdS using the non-abelian DBI action. |
