Work In Progress (WIP)

The Work In Progress (WIP) initiative is a student Journal Club seminar organized by PhD students for PhD students. It is meant to be an informal meeting, happening on time to time, generally held on Thursday at 4pm in room 137 (first floor), every week. The seminars typically last for 45 minutes leaving time for questions and discussion. Afterwards we gather at the SISSA canteen for the PhDrinks.

For infos please contact Fabrizio Aramini (faramini@sissa.it), Stefano Lanza (slanza@sissa.it) or Paul Veltman (pveltman@sissa.it).

You can find the list of past seminars at WIP history.

Topological order in the lattice: the Kitaev quantum double

Topologically-ordered phases of matter are of great interest in condensed-matter physics. In particular, Kitaev proposed in a seminal paper that such phases could be used to perform fault-tolerant quantum computation. In this talk I will present a family of exactly solvable lattice models, now known as "Kitaev quantum double" models, which can potentially be used as topological quantum computers. Their construction is based on the choice of a finite group G, and at low energies such systems are described by a discrete gauge theory with gauge group G. I will focus on understanding how these topological aspects arise in the lattice model, and connect them to our usual field-theoretic/continuum point of view. If time allows, I'll go through some concrete examples for specific G.
