Food Knowledge is Resilient

A SISSA research study published in a special issue of the journal Brain and Cognition, completely dedicated to the cognitive neuroscience of food, analyzes the lexical-semantic deficits of the food category in patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. The study shows that knowledge about food is preserved more than other categories of stimuli, even in the case of severe syndromes. Further, perception of caloric intake affects a person’s ability to remember the name of a food; the higher the calories, the more knowledge is preserved.

Cristian Michelletti’s research highlighted on Science Magazine

A recent paper published in the journal Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) coordinated by Cristian Micheletti, Professor of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), Trieste, was highlighted in a commentary article in Science Magazine, the popular website published by AAAS and devoted to the popularization of science. The work in which Micheletti and colleagues reconstructed the 3D shape of chromosomes using a cutting-edge technique, was chosen by Science Magazine because of its high scientific value.

Workshop on "Recent Developments in Numerical Methods for Model Reduction” at IHP

In the framework of the 2016 special fall quater at Institut Henri Poincarè (IHP) "Numerical Methods for PDEs" there will be a workshop on "Recent Developments in Numerical Methods for Model Reduction" (November 7-10, 2016) co-organized by Ecole des Ponts-ParisTech (CERMICS), Politecnico di Milano (MOX) and SISSA (mathLab).

Red is Good

Red means "Green light, go for it!" Green means: "hmm, better not!" Like an upside down traffic light in our brain, color helps us decide whether or not to eat something. This, according to a study at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste and recently published in the journal Scientific Reports stating that vision is the main sense we use to guide us in food choices. To evaluate calorie intake, we rely on a "color code."
