According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Arwu) of Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, Sissa ranks between the 51st and 75th places in the world in mathematics. Arwu, the most accredited among world university rankings, has just published the results of 2020 for the period 2014-18, which see the mathematicians of Sissa place in the top 75 internationally and between the first and fourth place in Italy. The experts of the Chinese university for almost 20 years have been selecting the best institutions in the world among tens of thousands with a methodology that favours large campuses and with large available funding . "For this reason," says Sissa director Stefano Ruffo, "this is a truly extraordinary result. We are a small university compared to other Italian universities present in the ranking as Pavia and the Statale of Milan, at least ten times larger than us. Nevertheless, thanks to the number of citations received from our research and international collaborations, we are among the best in the world according to Arwu, defined by criteria that rewards the quantity and quality of research perhaps in a more objective way than other rankings. The result is really sensational in mathematics, where among the top 50 positions there are universities like the one in California that alone receives funding equal to the entire Italian system. Even our area of physics holds its own, placing among the top 100 in the world in the company of other Italian universities such as the Normale of Pisa and Tor Vergata of Rome. This is an encouraging recognition not only for Sissa, but for all Italian research".
