Pull with caution

It's not easy to drive long molecule chains – such as DNA – through a "nanopore" (a pore which is just few millionths of a millimeter wide) because they tend to tangle up.

A simulation carried out by an international group of scientists – among whom are SISSA researchers – has suggested a solution: it's better to "pull" gently without applying too much force, otherwise the molecule could be stopped due to excessive friction. That is an important observation to create innovative DNA sequencing methods.

AIP Award

AIP, the Italian Association of Psychology awarded one of the two prizes for the Sperimental Section 2011 to Liuba Papeo, for her SISSA PhD thesis titled "The tie between action and language is in our imagination". AIP is one of the national landmarks for Italian psychologists since 1992.

SISSA in Festa

Essential metals in brain development and neurodegeneration

21 - 22 May 2012

We are honored to inform you about the International Workshop on Essential metals in brain development and neurodegeneration that will be held on May 21-22 2012 in Trieste (Italy).

The Workshop aims at gathering together researchers with different backgrounds, who are interested in the role of essential metals in brain development and neurodegeneration. Speakers are encouraged to address important open problems, stimulate discussion and interaction among participants.

Mechanics of soft materials and tissues: modeling, simulation and experiments

7 - 9 May, 2012 / Meeting Room VII Floor

The focus of the workshop is to connect people with a background spanning from Physics of Soft Tissues, Continuum Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. The workshop is supported by the projects MathLCEs and BrainIFEM, and will cover three specific applications in the areas of biological tissues in pathological conditions, and synthetic tissues.

Higgs Boson disappointing

July 6, 2012

We all agree on this: the discovery of this new particle, announced last 4th July at CERN, is of historical importance. But are we sure of its real identity?
The director of SISSA, Guido Martinelli, comments on this news explaining why this discovery is "somehow disappointing".

The sense of "antisense" RNA

October 15, 2012

While studying Parkinson's disease, an international research group led by SISSA scientists in Trieste made a discovery which can improve industrial protein synthesis for therapeutic use. They managed to understand the use of RNA when it is not involved in the protein-coding process: the protein synthesis activity of coding genes can be enhanced, for example, by the activity of the non-coding one called "antisense".
