This year the European Research Council (ERC) has reached an important milestone: 10000 top researchers from all over the world have been given the opportunity to translate their ambitious ideas into concrete research projects thanks to ERC funding. To celebrate this achievement, the ERC is hosting a virtual event entitled “Celebrating 10000 grantees” on 6 May 2021 with several distinguished speakers, including including Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, ERC President, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament and Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. During the ceremony the name of the 10,000th researcher to be awarded an ERC grant will also be revealed.

Since its foundation in 2007, the ERC has been supporting investigator-driven frontier research, on the basis of scientific excellence. It represents an invaluable tool for scientists who are allowed to follow their curiosity an contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

Since then, SISSA has received 25 ERC grants, including 9 Starting Grants, 8 Advanced Grants, 6 Consolidator Grants and 2 Proof of Concept Grants. The School ranks among the top hosting institutions in Italy, in particular with respect to the small faculty size: 20% of its current faculty members have been awarded one or more ERC grants. More information are available here.

The event will take place on 6 May from 11:00 to 12:00.
Registration and programme are available here.
