Claudio Pettinari, the Rector of the University of Camerino will hold the special seminar "Metal organic frameworks for next-generation materials" from 11:00 in room 128-129.
The lecture will focus on the applications of new-generation materials as a tool in the energy transition beyond fossil fuels. From reducing CO2 emissions to carbon capture, through reversible storage of energy with hydrogen: all these key technological applications in the transition require new classes of materials and new tools to develop them.
Abstract: Energy is one of the most challenging problems for humankind. All human activities need energy. A vital energy resource is represented by fossil fuels but there are growing concerns that burning fossil fuels cannot be sustained in view of the increasing chemical commodities demand and, most relevant, for the impact on the atmosphere. The increasing level of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced from the burning of fossil fuels has raised increasing concerns over the impact on global eco-systems. Increasing research efforts have addressed these concerns by focusing on many aspects, such as capture and storage of CO2, and the use of cleaner energy sources such as methane (CH4) or methanol as alternatives to petroleum in vehicle motion. An additional possibility stands on the use of hydrogen (H2) as an energy carrier: it should reduce or even eliminate CO2 emissions. For all of these applications the key target and required technological advance is the creation of new functional materials with high efficiency in fuel gas separation, capture and reversible storage. Porous Coordination Polymers (PCPs) constructed from metal cation or cluster nodes joined by, at least, ditopic linkers are a significant class of new hybrid solids that show potential for such applications.
Claudio Pettinari was born in 1964 in Camerino, where was graduated in chemistry in 1989. Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Camerino from 2010. He is author of ca 400 papers published on international journals and 250 communications and 4 patents. Winner of the “Bonati” Prize in 1998 (Organometallic Chemistry), and of the NASINI Medal in 2004 (Inorganica Chemistry). “Camerte dell’anno” 2013, Doctor honoris causa from UNiv. of Galati, Member of the scientific academia of Lisboa. Chair of the ISOC International School of Organometallic Chemistry, secretariat of the N-donor ligands european meeting, Rector of the Camerino University.
