It's not easy to drive long molecule chains – such as DNA – through a "nanopore" (a pore which is just few millionths of a millimeter wide) because they tend to tangle up.
A simulation carried out by an international group of scientists – among whom are SISSA researchers – has suggested a solution: it's better to "pull" gently without applying too much force, otherwise the molecule could be stopped due to excessive friction. That is an important observation to create innovative DNA sequencing methods.

Microrobots of the future, whether surgeons, cleaners or transporters, will have to be able to move about in an efficient and precise manner. To make this possible and improve the locomotor skills of these artificial devices, scientists like Antonio De Simone and his group at the International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste are studying the movement of unicellular organisms. De Simone has just been awarded a Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) amounting to 1,300,000 euro.

The competition is a call to the worldwide scientific community to use exciting new technologies provided by the VisIVO Science Gateway and/or the VisIVO Mobile Application to produce amazing images and movies from multi-dimensional datasets coming either from observations or numerical simulations.
Although VisIVO tools are specialized for astrophysical datasets the competition is open to all scientists and common citizens alike aiming to investigate datasets related to other fields, e.g. life sciences or physics.
On February 20, a plaque in memory of Ludwig Boltzmann, the physicist known for his studies on the atom, will be inaugurated in Duino, at the very site where Boltzmann took his life in 1906.
