Empathy is what makes us human: it is the ability to reflect ourselves in other people's emotions and what creates that fundamental cohesion at the basis of our society. The ability to be empathic originates in our brain, in ancient and basic structures making up the material of which even very complex forms of empathy are made.

This is what Jean Decety, one of the world's most prominent experts in this field, talked about in a lecture held on 20th September at SISSA.

L'empatia ci rende umani: è la capacità di rispecchiarci nelle emozioni altrui e crea quella fondamentale coesione che sta alla base della nostra società. La capacità di essere empatici ha origine nel nostro cervello, in strutture antiche e basilari che costituiscono i mattoni anche di forme molto complesse di empatia.
