VMPD2015 - Variational Methods for Plasticity and Dislocations

The intensive period on Variational Methods for Plasticity and Dislocations will take place at SISSA, Trieste, Italy, in the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant Quasistatic and Dynamic Evolution Problems in Plasticity and Fracture, from February 23 to May 15, 2015.
The activities will be organized around one-week minicourses with daily lectures.

Gadda e il rapporto scienza e letteratura - Il dolore della cognizione

Giuseppe O. Longo parlerà del rapporto di Carlo Emilio Gadda con la scienza in un incontro pubblico, nell’ambito del ciclo “Scienza, letteratura e impegno civile” organizzato dal Laboratorio Interdisciplinare della SISSA di Trieste. L’evento si terrà al Caffè San Marco giovedì 29 gennaio alle 18 e sarà moderato da Giuseppe Mussardo, direttore del Laboratorio Interdisciplinare della SISSA.

Young Scientists Seminars Series on Reduced order Modelling

Talks on reduced order modelling in several fields: computational fluid dynamics, multiphysics, geometrical parametrizations, fluidic networks, domain decomposition, data assimilation. A round table of discussion is planned. State of the art and future plans/developments on the topics are underlined. The events is suited for local, national and international partners.

Workshop on “Experimental Search for Quantum Gravity”

The aim of this workshop is to put together experimentalist, theoreticians and phenomenologists that are interested in possible tests of the quantum/discrete structure of spacetime at very short distances. 
We plan to have a number of rather focussed talks that will discuss possible phenomenological tests of quantum gravity scenarios and propose new ideas in this direction.

"Many body physics in complex fluids" - Colloquium with Alberto Parola

Complex fluids belong to the broad class of systems, known collectively as soft matter.

They are solutions, typically water-based, of macromolecular entities (often called colloidal particles) with typical sizes ranging from 1 to 1000 nm:

much larger than the atomic size but still small on a macroscopic scale. This class of systems permeates diverse fields of science, including physics, chemistry and biology, also playing a major role in the paint, food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry.
