Joyce’s quark

Physics will be opening on Friday 16 June Bloomsday 2017, the event that, since several years, Trieste dedicates to James Joyce and his unforgettable character Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of his famous novel Ulysses. Giuseppe Mussardo, Professor of Theoretical Physics and Director of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory at SISSA, will start the programme with a conference entitled “The colour and the taste of quarks”.

Photography: over and beyond

Photography beyond photography, in other words when taking a picture means creating some kind of artwork, engaging techniques, imagination, creativity, forcing the photographer to interact with his/her own photos. The last appointment of the series “If I knew how to take a good pic, I would always do it” will focus on the key approaches to “artistic” photography, such as Light Painting, HDRI (High Dynamic Range Imaging), Infrared Photography and more.

The seminar will take place on Thursday 15 June in room 128-129, I floor, starting from 6.00 pm.

New appointment of the series “If I knew how to take a good pic, I would always do it” by Giuseppe Mussardo and Andrea Tomicich. The event will focus on street photography, where images are capable of capturing a mood or a specific moment that words could not easily describe.

From students to mathematicians

From 14 to 16 June 2017, many former students of the Percorso Formativo Comune, who have now permanent or temporary positions in different international universities, institutions and companies, will join SISSA and the University of Trieste to celebrate ten years of the Master program. The conference will consist of some scientific presentations by former students, together with two round tables about the relation between Mathematics and Academia, and the World of Employment.

Geometric analysis on smooth and non-smooth spaces

SISSA will hold a conference titled "Geometric analysis on smooth and non-smooth spaces" from 19 to 23 June 2017.
The aim of the conference is to bring together experts with various backgrounds, with the hope to foster an intensive exchange of ideas. Speakers from several international universities will participate in the conference. Inputs from different areas of mathematics are welcome.

One face, no faces and one hundred thousand faces

New appointment of the series “If I knew how to take a good pic, I would always do it” by Giuseppe Mussardo and Andrea Tomicich.

The event will focus on portrait, one of the most difficult types of photography. The capture of a look, a face, a situation: a "candid shot" can freeze time and emotions. The topic will be addressed through the pictures of world-renowned photographers such as Gisèle Freund, Dorothea Lange, Vivian Maier, William Hine, Sebastião Salgado and Steve McCurry.

Spontaneous brain activity for understanding the mind

“Spontaneous brain activity: a key for understanding the mind” is the title of the lecture by Prof. Maurizio Corbetta scheduled for 31 May.  Professor Corbetta is Full Professor and Chair of Neurology in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Padua, Italy. He is also the founding director of the new Padua Neuroscience Center. Introducing his seminar Professor Corbetta says: “It is well known that the brain is organized as a network of connections between nerve cells.

SISSA SUMMER FESTIVAL 2017

SISSA amphitheater is ready to host a series of beautiful events that will merge art and science in a unique environment. With six different events planned from 26 May to 14 July, SISSA SUMMER FESTIVAL will offer the opportunity to listen the musicians from Giuseppe Tartini conservatory and attend actress Diana Hobel’s play entitled “Paolo Budinich and the Paradox of the Adventure”. In the program, world folk and tzigane music concert performed by an orchestra of 40 children led by the conductor Martin Schaefer and the show “Lab rats” by Teatro Miela.
