According to many scientists the fact that ALS patients experience (in addition to severe motor deficits) greater linguistic difficulty with verbs denoting action compared to nouns denoting objects depends on their motor deficit. The idea is that the motor system plays a role in the semantic encoding of these words. A new study conducted with the participation of SISSA has tested this hypothesis and suggests a major role for the “executive function”.
Secondo molti scienziati il fatto che i pazienti SLA (oltre ai gravi disturbi motori) mostrino evidenti e maggiori difficoltà linguistiche con i verbi che descrivono azioni rispetto ai nomi degli oggetti, dipende dal loro deficit motorio. L’idea è che il sistema motorio abbia un ruolo nella codifica semantica di queste parole. Un nuovo studio a cui ha partecipato anche la SISSA mette alla prova quest’ipotesi e suggerisce un ruolo importante per la “funzione esecutiva”.
