Joanna Narkiewicz gained her Ph.D. degree in 2008 in biological sciences, specialization in molecular biology at the University of Gdansk, Poland. Her Ph.D. project was focused on the study of the expression of human HtrA genes in ovarian and endometrial cancers and their implications in TGF-1 signaling pathway. She was also involved in a project focused on the clinical value of VEGF isoforms expression in ovarian cancer.

In 2008 she joined the Prion Biology Laboratory at the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste. Currently, she collaborates with the Agricultural Research Council, Research Centre for Soil-Plant System in Gorizia, Italy. Her research is focused on prion protein interaction with soil humic substances and their potential anti-prion activities.
