Information for visitors

SISSA and the Mathematical Physics sector are located 4 km from Trieste central train station, close to the small town Villa Opicina, in the Karst (italian: Carso), a very typical limestone plateau.

For any practical information you can contact the sector secretary Emanuele Tuillier Illingworth (tuillier@sissa.it)

Further information on how to reach SISSA can be found on SISSA website.

How to reach Trieste

By plane.

Trieste "Ronchi dei Legionari" airport is about 30km north-west of SISSA. From there you can take the APT coach service (Line 51) to Trieste train station, tickets are available from the blue machine just beyond the arrivals gate (cost 3.25 EUR). (Note that this service runs somewhat less frequently at weekends; tickets for the return journey must be purchased in advance, either downtown from the bus station next to Trieste Centrale, or from the ICTP infopoint, at the ICTP reception.) Alternatively, take a taxi (cost is around 45 EUR with a surcharge for luggage). The Venice Airports ( Marco Polo and Treviso) also are viable. From there you'll need to take the coach service (tickets available from the ATVO service desk at the airport foyer) to Venezia Mestre train station; from there, take a train to Trieste Centrale (the duration is one and a half to two hours; be sure you take the train through Portogruaro, NOT through Udine). Though not far, the airport of Lubiana is poorly connected with Trieste, and we do not reccomend it unless you plan to rent a car.

By train.

The main train station is Trieste Centrale, about 5km from SISSA. You'll need to take the 38 bus or a taxi to get to SISSA. Most long distance trains coming to Trieste pass through Venezia Mestre train station, which might involve changing trains at Mestre. In Italy, train tickes should be purchased in advance either from an automatic vending machine or from a sales assistant. Validate your ticket with the yellow machine just before travelling.

How to reach SISSA from downtown

By bus.

Take bus N. 38 from:

  1. Via Galatti (terminus): near Piazza Oberdan, on the same side of the tramway terminus, or
  2. from the train station: exit on the left (coming from the trains), cross the street at the traffic light, take left, then right in Via degli Stella - the bus stop is in Via Udine, slightly on the left when you get out of Via degli Stella.

Bus N. 38 runs every 20 minutes in the mornig at the peak hours, or every 30 minutes. See the schedule. Get off at the uphill terminus, right in front of SISSA. Tickets should be bought in advance - they are available at most news kiosks and tobacconists, and at the vending machine at the bus terminus close to SISSA. You can buy

and many more (link in Italian). Please validate your ticket once on board.

There is a travel planner available, and a list of all buses with paths and timetables (both links are in Italian only).
