In Trieste the second most powerful computer centre in Italy

An agreement between SISSA-ICTP has been signed: 130 TeraFlops performance

July 13, 2012

It will be one of the most advanced computer centres in Italy, the second most powerful, with 130 TeraFlops (one TeraFlops equals one thousand billion calculations per second), and a storing capacity of around 200 TeraBytes, totally 32 million hour calculations per year.

It is a HPC (High Performance Computing) system, a high-performance supercomputer for scientific research. It will be located at the "old" SISSA headquarter (in via Beirut 2-4 in Trieste) and initially it will be used by SISSA and ICTP research groups. Further agreements with external partners are envisaged in the near future.

Today, 13th July, the Director of ICTP Fernando Quevedo and the Director of Sissa Guido Martinelli officially ratified the creation of HCP by signing a joint agreement. This nine-year agreement will bring together these two institutions in pursuing the ambitious task to realise a real Italian jewel for high-performance calculations. A technical-scientific committee made up of four members appointed by SISSA, four members appointed by ICTP and a president will be in charge of carrying out this programme.

"High-performance scientific calculations – explained Martinelli – are now crucial tools both for basic science and for their uncountable technological and industrial applications, not only in industrialised countries but also in developing countries". Among such applications are: high energy physics and astrophysics, condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics, computational biology, neuroscience, applied mathematics, climatology, earth science, biomedicine, shipbuilding and many more.

The Director of the school then added: "Both SISSA and ICTP consider this activity one of their strengths. We hope this centre will be ready before summer 2013, it will be 400 sq m large and its total cost will be € 2 million".

"This initiative not only will enhance collaboration between our two institutes – stated Quevedo – but it will also bring benefits to those scientists from developed countries visiting ICTP every year. Thanks to the knowledge acquired here they will be able to increase their experience and their expertise, and they will reduce the gap between their own countries and the industrialised ones", added the Director of ICTP.

The work carried out to restore the old SISSA headquarter, financed by the School itself, is going on fast. The old electric infrastructures still have to be reinforced to allow machines to function properly, but there is already a draft agreement among SISSA, ICTP, Synchrotron and the Universities of Trieste and Udine for a project focused on sustainable energy. To make the machines, an agreement with INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics) in Pisa, Italy, has been entered into.

This new computer cluster will be an opportunity to create another virtuous network of researchers who, thanks to their new expertise, will enhance its activities. This will have a positive impact on business and institutions, and will be very likely to create spin-offs.

Moreover, a new international Master's course in HPC for Science and Technology will be set up (the only one in Italy, together with ICTP), in close contact with the current PhD courses in physics, mathematics and neuroscience at SISSA.
