On Wednesday 18 January 2017, Elena Castellani, science philosopher and writer of the University of Florence, will give a seminar on the historical and philosophical aspects of symmetries in physics. The talk will present the historical roots of the concept of symmetry and, then, will provide an overview of the intellectual debate on this topic. It will highlight how the issues discussed relate to more traditional themes in the philosophy of science, such as the status of the laws of nature and, more generally, the relationships between mathematics, physical theory and the world. “Symmetries in physics” is one of the “History of science” seminars organized by SISSA Interdisciplinary Laboratory. The event will take place in the Big Meeting room, 7th floor, SISSA starting from 3.00 pm.
Mercoledì 18 gennaio, Elena Castellani, filosofa della scienza e scrittrice dell’Università di Firenze, ci condurrà in un viaggio affascinante negli aspetti storici e filosofici delle simmetrie in fisica. Nel suo intervento, la ricercatrice ci farà conoscere le origini di queste teorie ed esplorare il dibattito intellettuale che da questo ambito si estende a temi più vasti come la relazione tra matematica, fisica teorica e il nostro mondo. L’evento rientra nell’ambito della serie di incontri organizzati dal Laboratorio Interdisciplinare dedicati alla storia della scienza. Il seminario avrà luogo presso la Big Meeting room al settimo piano della SISSA, a partire dalle ore 15.00.
