Cognitive Modules & Interfaces

September 18th-19th 2012

Different fields of cognitive sciences - language acquisition, music, mathematics, reasoning, animal communication, pragmatics and social cognition - and their interactions, as well as neuroscience will be the topics of this workshop.

INVITED SPEAKERS:

LUCA BONATTI // ICREA and Pompeu Fabra Uni. Barcelona - Spain

At the origin of human rationality: infants' reasoning about future events

STANISLAS DEHAENE // Collège de France and Neurospin, Saclay - France

Higgs boson: some comments

July 5, 2012

The discovery of the Higgs boson is an extraordinary success of scientific research on theoretical and experimental physics and of modern technology, and it is an important step forward to understand the components and the fundamental forces of nature. At SISSA, one of the most important international research centers, Particle Physics is one of the main research fields and some researchers have enthusiastically welcomed this important event.

SISSA Excellence Grants: a chance for young scientists

SISSA actively promotes and supports talented young researchers and also this year this can be done by SISSA Excellence Grants, grants for post-doctoral research projects awarded to scientists at the beginning of their career, showing talent, initiative and independence.

This € 392,000 financing divided over 3 years will cover two positions. At the end of the project particularly successful researchers could be considered for a permanent position at SISSA.

Towards Quantum Computers

A project coordinated by SISSA in Trieste and financed by the EU aims at developing new theoretical tools in the service of new frontiers in computation.

The European project Irses-Quantum Integrability, Conformal Field Theory and Topological Quantum Computation, coordinated by Giuseppe Mussardo of SISSA in Trieste, aims at developing new theoretical tools to be applied to frontiers in computation, to take a step further towards super-calculus and quantum computers.

Studying micromotility with over a million euro

Microrobots of the future, whether surgeons, cleaners or transporters, will have to be able to move about in an efficient and precise manner. To make this possible and improve the locomotor skills of these artificial devices, scientists like Antonio De Simone and his group at the International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste are studying the movement of unicellular organisms. De Simone has just been awarded a Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) amounting to 1,300,000 euro.

Pull with caution

It's not easy to drive long molecule chains – such as DNA – through a "nanopore" (a pore which is just few millionths of a millimeter wide) because they tend to tangle up.

A simulation carried out by an international group of scientists – among whom are SISSA researchers – has suggested a solution: it's better to "pull" gently without applying too much force, otherwise the molecule could be stopped due to excessive friction. That is an important observation to create innovative DNA sequencing methods.
