«Today we know that our experience of beauty is linked to the activities of specific parts of the brain, and there is one area located in the emotional brain activity in which always correlates with the experience of beauty. Those who speak of reductionism or simply ignore this evidence, thinking that beauty is a matter only for philosophers, connoisseurs and art historians are committing a serious mistake». These are the words of Semir Zeki, University College London professor, the father of neuroaesthetics - the discipline which combines cognitive neuroscience with aesthetics - and author of best-sellers such as "Inner Vision", "A Vision of the Brain" and "Ou La Quete de L'Essentiel" written with celebrated painter Balthus. Zeki will be guest of honour at the Welcome Day held by Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Trieste on 28 November. The Neurobiology of Beauty is the title of the seminar which the scientist will hold before an audience of researchers and students, all brought together to launch a new academic year at the institute. «Neurobiology», he explains, «allows us to investigate the cerebral mechanisms that are engaged when we see a wonderful painting, listen to thrilling music or even in more sophisticated situations such as the aesthetic pleasure that formulas and theorems inspires in mathematicians». This seminar will thus be a one-off opportunity for an evocative journey through the mysteries of our brains and emotions exploring one of the most impenetrable and profound of human experiences.

«Oggi sappiamo che l’esperienza della bellezza è collegata all’attività di specifiche parti del cervello. Una in particolare, localizzata nell’area deputata all’elaborazione delle emozioni, risulta sempre collegata a questo tipo di esperienza. Coloro che, di fronte a queste evidenze, parlano di riduzionismo o, semplicemente, le ignorano pensando che sia un concetto di cui solo filosofi, esteti e storici dell’arte possano occuparsi, commettono un errore profondo». Parola di Semir Zeki, professore dell’University College London, padre della neuroestetica - la disciplina che unisce le neuroscienze cognitive all’estetica - e autore di best-seller come “La visione dall’interno”, “Con gli occhi del cervello. Immagini, luci, colori” o “La ricerca dell'essenziale” scritto con il celebre pittore Balthus. Zeki sarà l’ospite d’eccezione del Welcome Day della Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) di Trieste, il prossimo 28 novembre. “La neurobiologia della bellezza” è il titolo del seminario che lo scienziato terrà davanti a un pubblico di ricercatrici e ricercatori, studenti e studentesse, personale della Scuola e autorità, tutti riuniti per dare il via al nuovo anno accademico dell’Istituto. «La neurobiologia» spiega lo studioso «permette di indagare i meccanismi cerebrali responsabili di ciò che proviamo osservando uno splendido quadro, ascoltando una musica appassionante o anche in situazioni più raffinate, come succede ai matematici, davanti al piacere estetico di formule e teoremi». Il seminario triestino sarà dunque un’occasione unica per un suggestivo viaggio nei misteri del nostro cervello e delle emozioni, a esplorare uno degli aspetti più insondabili e profondi dell’esperienza umana.
