The PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics has always been part of the postgraduate educational programme of SISSA. More than a hundred students have now obtained their PhD in this field from SISSA.
Every year five students are selected to attend a three year program (plus an extra year, if needed) of study and research.
During the first year students attend about 450 hours of postgraduate courses covering a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from phenomenological to more formal aspects of theoretical particle physics. There are no degree courses, thus professors are fully dedicated to PhD education. By the beginning of the second year, students undertake a research program under the supervision of a staff member, or of scientists working with research institutions with which SISSA has specific agreements (such as ICTP and INFN). The PhD degree is typically obtained after 3 to 4 years since the beginning of the program.
During their staying in Trieste, the students have the opportunity to interact with about 20 students of the same PhD curriculum plus hundreds of others belonging to different groups at SISSA, coming from allover the world. Together with this, the international environment of the Trieste area, which includes the International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and other international institutions, makes a PhD at SISSA in Theoretical Particle Physics an unprecedented opportunity for a very a challenging and stimulating experience.
