Vita
Giuseppe E. Santoro, Associate Professor in SISSA since 2002, got his PhD in Physics in 1991 from Purdue University (Indiana, USA) and his “Perfezionamento in Fisica’’ from the Scuola Normale Superiore in 1992. Post-doc at SISSA in 1991-1993. EU post-doctoral fellow at ESRF (Grenoble) in 1994. Assistant Professor (Ricercatore) in SISSA from 1994 to 2002.
Author of 85 scientific publications in refereed journals (including 1 Science, 1 Nature Physics, and 12 Physical Review Letters); total citations around 1100; H-index 21.
His research interestes have included, over the years: quantum many-body and strongly correlated systems, spin systems, statistical and electronics properties of surfaces, one-dimensional systems, theory of magnetic impurities, theory of the electron gas, and, more recently, adiabatic quantum computation and quantum annealing.
Research
The lines of research to pursue in the near future are:
- study of the dynamics of quantum systems out of equilibrium, both isolated and in contact with environments, both in the regime where the evolution is slow (annealing) and fast (sudden quench). One of the research lines I am currently pursuing is that of thermalization of a closed quantum system after a sudden quench of the Hamiltonian, and the role of the integrability.
- effects of dissipation in nanoscale systems both quantum and classical (nanofriction and nanolubrication). Here one of the current topics is how quantum mechanics would manifest itself, at low enough temperatures, when dissipation phenomena, for instance when a Atomic Force Microscope tip scans a surface, involve degrees of freedom for which quantum effects are potentially important (e.g., when hydrogen atoms vibrations, or double well situations, are involved).
